NYC Earned Sick Time Quick Facts


If you work within the boundaries of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx or Staten Island) for more than 80 hours a year, you can earn up to 40 hours a year of paid sick time, regardless of whether you are a full-time, part-time or temporary worker!

  • Who can you use sick time to care for?
    • Yourself, a child,spouse, domestic partner, parent of a spouse or a domestic partner, grandchild, grandparent or sibling
  • How do you accrue sick time?
    • In businesses with 5 or more employees:
      • earn on hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked
    • In businesses with 5 or less employees:
      • earn on hour of unpaid sick time for every 30 hours worked
    • You may only earn 40 hours of sick time per year
  • Effective Date: April 1, 2014
