New Jersey Family Leave Insurance Progam

 

New Jersey took a big step forward in May 2008 when Family Leave Insurance legislation was signed into law. Under the new law which became effective July 1, 2009, New Jersey workers are able to receive wage benefits when they take time to care for a family member or to bond with a new child.

The program is funded through employee contributions and provides six weeks partial wage replacement (up to a maximum of $559 in 2011) for workers when they take time to care for a family member or bond with a newborn or newly adopted child.

The New Jersey Family Leave Insurance Program is only the second such program in the U.S.  California was the first to enact a family leave insurance program in 2002.

Healthy Families Act introduced in Congress

The Healthy Families Actwas introduced on May 12, 2011 by Congresswoman DeLauro (D-CT) and Senator Harkin (D-IA). It will allow workers to earn up to seven paid sick days a year to recover from illness, access preventive care or look after a sick child or other family members.


What Counts as Family Leave?

Family leave is when you take time to care for your child, husband, wife, domestic partner, or parent because of serious health problems or bond with a new baby, adopted or foster child (this is for both mother and father.

Paid sick days are job protected leave which allows ill workers to care for themselves or a sick family member without fear of losing their job.
